Why did you decide to work at Kotter?
Dr. Kotter has been at the vanguard of contemporary leadership and organizational transformation and performance for decades. The opportunity to take this inspiration and experience and apply it in an environment where we push ourselves – and push our clients – to approach work differently and deliver exceptional outcomes remains a constant inspiration and aspiration for me.
What challenges do you most enjoy helping your clients solve?
At some point, almost all business value chains are simple. But organizations and individuals have created tremendous complexity around something that started off as being rather simple. I like to dive in, roll up my sleeves, and figure out how to make things simple. How to get things done. How to delight clients. How to deliver a great margin. How to capitalize on the potential of hundreds, or thousands, or hundreds of thousands of employees to make things happen. Faster. Simpler. Because I believe so much more is possible.
What in your background helps you in this job?
Stick with me here for a minute – my law degree.
Learning law opened me up to a fascinating discipline of understanding how to approach critical thinking. In our business, it is important to understand not only what people are doing, but why they do what they do. In that regard, I also believe that my early career and life in Zimbabwe and South Africa provided a rich foundation and reminder of how people and situations are all different and cannot be homogenized.
What’s got you thinking right now?
The great work that we have going on around understanding the connection between our brains, individual and organizational performance, and the role of leadership in all of this. I’m constantly listening to podcasts, and my favorite changes so frequently, the marketing team can’t update the website fast enough, so you’ll have to email me to discover my current favorites.
